Sony and Hitachi already shipping 4-inch displays for next iPhone?

The iPhone rumor mill is slowly starting to churn just nearly two months after the launch of the latest iPhone 4S. This time it’s bringing rumors about Hitachi and Sony kicking off shipments of the next-gen iPhone display, allegedly measuring 4 inches on the diagonal. Japanese blog Macotakara spread the news, citing unnamed sources in Apple’s Asian supply network.

The two companies have allegedly also teamed up to produce modified displays for... the iPad 4. While the iPad 3 is still a thing of the future, the fourth generation is covered in even more mystery, so we’d definitely take this latter part of the rumor with a grain of salt. Expectations for the next-gen iPad are already sky-high with screen resolution said to double to 2048 x 1536 pixels.

Hitachi and Sony might be some of the companies Apple turns to as the recent legal battle with Korean Samsung has the two companies being cautious in their business relationship. The two are set to join forces with Toshiba in a JV dubbed Japan Display Co. Whispers mention that the companies had to alter their production line significantly to meet Apple’s demands.
